AE2 Analysis of Birke Baehr's TED Talk

Birke Baehr: What's Wrong With Our Food System

My analysis of this presentation video is:
Impression:
Birke seems to be accustomed to have a presentation, though he is just eleven years old! He is confident of himself. He speaks at appropriate volume and clarity. He's talking about dark side of the industrial food system and promote awareness of choosing local and organic food.  He described problems like genetically- engineered seeds and organisms and harmful agricultural chemicals, then, introduce solutions that make choice of organic food. He wants to be an organic farmer for the future.
Strength:
His presentation strengths are
  • He uses kids' taste of colorful advertising as an analogy of fictional image of farming.
  • He uses powerpoint effectively. He doesn't use it too much and the funny image and the cute illustration attract audience.
  • In the last part, he repeats the word " make the difference". He also emphasize the last sentence by speaking word by word.
  • He faces forward, stands straight and moves his hands.
  • He even uses the fact he is only eleven years old. He sometimes acts speak an adult on purpose. That leads audience to get more attention to the presentation.
Weaknesses:
  • He seems confident but he may be nervous more than a little, so he tends to speak and move his hands just up and down without a break.
  • He speaks with few intonation and same speed.

AE1 Characteristics of Good/Bad Presentations

In a good presentation, the presenter talks clearly, not just read notes or screen and face to the audience,  makes some jokes related to the speech and attracts listeners interests, asks questions to listeners and uses gestures.

On the other hand, in a bad presentation, the presenter mumbles and stumbles, pays attention to the notes and screen, talks too fast or slowly, speaks in a monotone manner and  moves at every moment.
